A tour was arranged for Probus members of the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Plant in Cambridge, Ontario. The tour starting at 9:30, lasted approximately one hour, starting at the Visitor Centre and involved a motorized tram tour through South Weld and North Assembly, two of the most visually impressive shops in Cambridge. Lunch at the Mandarin Restaurant followed the tour. |
History and Description In 1986, Toyota broke ground for the plant at TMMC, and since 1988, Canadian hands have been making Canadian vehicles. In 1988, the year TMMC opened, Toyota built 153 vehicles. Today, their three plants in Cambridge and Woodstock have the ability to build over 500,000 vehicles annually. Toyota Cambridge Plant North is where the Corolla is built. Since TMMC started production, just under 4,000,000 Corollas spanning 6 generations have been manufactured, Toyota Cambridge Plant South is where the Lexus RX 350 and the RX 450h are built. From start to final inspection, it takes approximately 24 hours of elapsed time to assemble a single Lexus RX 350. Toyota Woodstock Plant West is where the Toyota RAV4 crossover utility is built.
